With regards to Hudson, their 'Step-Down' name was derived from their low frames which as stated helped them greatly in the early days of NASCAR. Unfortunely it was also part of the downfall as restyling the cars with these sort of frames wasn't easy or cheap. Thus Hudson's line stagnated in the early 1950s as other brands updated their immediate post war cars. 

As for the Plymouth pictured it's a nice model to see in stock fashion that's not been hot rodded to death.
